Memorial Ceremony old Jewish cemetery

HONOR OUR ANCESTORS

The old Jewish cemetery of Barcelona, in Montjuïc, has been a Cultural Asset of National Interest since 2009, at the request of the city's Jewish institutions.
Initiatives subsequently arose to reinforce the memory and connection with this site, such as research that has revealed more information about its extension and limits.

Since it is tradition to visit cemeteries during the High Holidays, for a few years we have also visited this cemetery collectively.
We gather on this lot to renew our commitment to the principle of Kavod HaMet: "offering the deceased appropriate respect and honor."
We return to the ancient tradition that had been interrupted after 1391, when anti-Jewish attacks resulted in the disappearance of the community.
On the cemetery site, at first glance, no identifying element is seen but we know that under our feet, under bushes and roots, lie members of our extended Jewish family.

With our action we reweave the soul of the place with the landscape that has naturally been generated.

In this meeting we will briefly comment on the history of the place, we will say the prayers and songs that accompany this ritual, we will read the few names that appear on the tombstones recovered in past excavations. We will especially remember Miriam, who died in the month of Kislev 4990 (1229 was common) whose tombstone was the only one found in the 2001 archaeological campaign.

You are invited to this ceremony, essential for the practice of collective memory of the Jewish community and that of the city.
Next we will do a javruta session.

Sunday, September 29, 5 p.m.
