BANC de SANG de CATALUNYA
This 2024, more than 70,000 people admitted to hospital centers in Catalonia will need some transfusion of blood, plasma or platelets, coming from blood donation.
The truth is that this year more than 260,000 donations will be needed to cover these patient needs.
Of the total transfusions carried out daily in Catalonia, the group that currently requires the most blood transfusions is neoplasms, 34%, followed by those of the digestive system, 15.5%, and in third place is that of cardiovascular diseases, which account for 12.3% of the total. Chronic pathologies linked to increased life expectancy are those that will require greater blood transfusions in the future.
In fact, the average age of patients receiving blood has increased in the last decade and is now around 73 years. This group of patients over 70 years of age represents the majority of blood recipients (56.6%). The other most important age group and the one that has grown the most is patients aged 80 and older, which represents 32% of those transfused.
