Shomer Aji Anoji (Paula Melamed)

Interview with Paula Melamed, Vice President of ATID (Genesis 4:8-11). We are more than two weeks from the Hamas attack in southern Israel, and our small community showed its solidarity in response to this emergency. Tell us how it all began.
On October 9th, I received a call on my phone requesting accommodation for two young people from Tel Aviv. This is how the idea of organizing a networked effort involving members of our Kehilá came about.

How do the requests come in?
Most people reach out through WhatsApp, through acquaintances, or friends of friends. It's a true chain of solidarity.
Now, we channel all requests via email to secretaria@atid.es.

What kind of assistance is needed?
The situations vary. For some, Barcelona or Madrid serve as a bridge to return to their home country in Latin America. For others, these cities provide a place to shelter until the situation stabilizes.
Currently, the most significant need is a place to live. Stays range from just 2 days to a week until a more stable arrangement can be found.
We are now receiving requests for two weeks or more, especially from those who can work remotely.
In all cases, before any arrangements are made, there is a phone interview to go through the security protocols for such cases.

How many people have been assisted in these days?
As of today, we have provided accommodation for 12 people, including families with children, young individuals, and adults. Their testimonials reassure us that we are doing well.

“Last night we were finally able to rest! We are very grateful. (family with children aged 1 and 3)”

“For now, we are fine. The nieces' aunt, with whom we are staying, managed to get us a donation of shoes. Thank you.” “I wanted to say how grateful I am for everything you did for us. The house is wonderful. It’s was very significant for me. Thank you.”

What kind of team do you have in this network?
Six families are providing their homes for a limited time, selflessly.

What should someone do if they want to host newcomers? All communication is centralized through our secretaria at secretaria@atid.es. Use “Accommodation” in the subject of the message and provide a brief description of the housing, family model, location, number of people to accommodate, and availability dates.

What other forms of assistance do we offer from Atid? A support line will be established during the stay, led by Dalia Hussid. We also have a small team that offers emotional assistance to those in need, whether they are members of the community or newcomers. To collaborate in this area, use "Support" in the message subject or specify the type of service you can offer.

Thank you very much, Paula, for putting our responsibility to others into practice. We will keep you informed about new needs and solidarity projects.
